Abstract
In the funeral culture in ancient Athens, it was characteristic to prepare a physical space to commemorate the deceased and to erect a funeral monument to express condolences about the deceased in the space. The various types of tomb monuments were devices for “resurrection” that allowed the deceased to enjoy a new life in the memories of the living after death. By erecting the funeral monuments in the cemetery adjacent to the city, the deceased, who were citizens once in the past, still coexist in a part of the city’s space. This study will focus on the method of visualizing the feeling of mourning for the dead in Attic pottery paintings and reliefs in stelai, and will examine only a few selected cases. The moment of losing a loved one in death and falling into grief is the most dramatic moment among human emotions. In Attic pottery paintings that give a glimpse of a funeral ceremony in ancient Athens, the grief over the deceased’s death is visualized in the gestures of the mourners. They place their hands on their heads and chests, which is consistent with literature sources depicting mourners. In these pottery paintings, the facial expressions of the mourners are restrained and thus, it is difficult to gauge their emotions. However, lamentation is revealed in a different way in Attic tomb reliefs of the classical period, which experienced disaters due to war and plague. From the second half of the 5th century BC to the third quarter of the 4th century BC, in Attic tomb reliefs, the emotion of mourning began to be expressed more concretely by moving from an idealized style to a realistic style.
