Abstract

Considered to be the embodiment of divine kingship, pharaohs were not only supreme leaders of a united polity but also an epiphany of the Sun God with a sacrosanct obligation to maintain the cosmic order, called ma'at in ancient Egyptian. Moreover, they were the only interface between the divine world up in the sky and the human society down on the earth. In this regard, assassinating a pharaoh was in effect equated with destroying a living god - a heinous crime which would disrupt the cosmic order established by the Creator. Some philological evidence left to us from ancient Egypt, however, indicates that there were attempts to kill pharaohs at different periods in time. This article aims to objectively study the attempted assassinations and present the historical significance of those events to modern readers. Three cases are under scrutiny in this article: (1) Pepy I of the Sixth Dynasty in the Old Kingdom; (2) Amenemhat I of the Twelfth Dynasty in the Middle Kingdom; and (3) Ramesses III of the Twentieth Dynasty in the New Kingdom. A plot to kill Pepy I was hinted at in an autobiography by Weni, who was the royal bodyguard and inspector. It is impossible to identify the event mentioned by the courtier as an assassination attempt due largely to the lack of evidence to buttress Weni's statement. In the case of Amenemhat I, most of the texts alluding to the assassination are literary in nature and they cannot be complemented by historical records. The attempt to murder Ramesses III can be reconstructed in detail based on judicial papyri that recorded the trials held against the conspirators of the so-called "Harem Conspiracy.“ In conclusion, those who attempted to kill their king were (minor) queens, court ladies and palace staffs serving the king in person. The motive behind these treasonous conspiracies was, with no exception, to disrupt the legitimate order of succession to the throne. Those attempts revealed by the philological evidence all failed. However, it should be considered that there could have been some successful cases in which the conspirators removed the king and his designated heir and put another minor prince on the throne, regarding the fact that ancient Egyptians were inclined to record the positive and brushed embarrassing and extraordinary events under the rug.
