Abstract

This study examined the effects of news and current affairs contents use on portal sites and social media on off-line political debate, political involvement, and vote intention. Results are as followings. It was found that the use of news and current affairs contents on portal sites positively affected off-line political debate, which in turn positively affected vote intention. The use of news and current affairs contents on portals positively affected off-line political debate, which in turn positively affected political involvement. The use of news and current affairs contents on portals had a positive effect on off-line political debate, which in turn leaded to an increase in political involvement, and ultimately, political involvement pos- itively affected vote intention. In addition, off-line political debate positively affected vote intention. Regarding the mediating effects of off-line political debate and political involvement, the following results were found. In the path through which the use of news and current affairs contents on portals affected vote intention, the mediating effect of off-line political debate was found to be significant. In the path through which off-line political debate affected vote intention, the mediating effect of political involvement was found to be significant. Off-line political debate and political involvement were found to play an important role in democratic political participation by influencing vote intention at the behavioral level. In the election period, the use of news and current affairs contents on portals can trigger political and election-related conversations or debates with people in personal rela- tionships, which can have a positive effect on the intention to participate in politics through vote. The use of news and current affairs contents on social media was found to have no significant effect on off-line political debate, political involvement, and vote intention. This suggests that the influences of social media on political participation in specific elections or political situations are thought to be much weaker than those of portals.
