Deux rhétoriques du défi - Don Juan et Hwang Chini, étude comparative de deux mythes littéraires -

본 논문에서 필자는 프랑스 문학뿐만 아니라 온 유럽 문학에 속하는 문학적 신화인 돈 주앙 이야기와 순 한국의 인물 황진이를 비교하고자 한다. 이 두 인물과 그들을 주제하는 소설들을 살펴보는데 앞서, 우선, 이 소설들[「황진이」류 소설과 「돈 주앙」류 소설]에 담긴 각각의 내용을 문학적 신화로 정의하려고 한다. 즉, 이 두 이야기들의 서술구조를 밝히고자 한다. 이러한 방향으로 이 두 신화를 살펴보면, 제일 먼저 눈에 띄는 요소는 엽색가(séducteur)의 형상이다. 돈 주앙은 물론이고 벽계수, 지족선사, 소세양, 등을 유혹하려는 황진이마저 엽색가로 규정된다. 그러나 엽색가가 돈 주앙이나 황진이의 특징이라 하여도, 그것만으로 이 두 이야기[신화]를 해석하기에는 부족하다. 서술구조를 띄는 신화인 이 두 이야기는 엽색가의 이미지에서 그치지 않는다. 즉, 돈 주앙의 이야기 속에서 돈 주앙이 가톨릭교의 반계몽주의에 도전하는 면이 있듯이, 황진이는 황진이의 신화 속에서 계속해서 양반에 도전하면서 그들의 위선적인 행동을 고발하려는 점이 분명히 있는 것이다. 이 두 신화에서 나타나는 도전에 대한 수사학은 그들의 서술구조의 핵심적인 초석 같은 요소이다. 여기서 돈 주앙이 카사노바와 달라지는 것이고, 마찬가지로 황진이는 단순한 요부(femme fatale)상[像]과 거리를 둔다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 돈 주앙의 역사적인 배경이 17세기의 스페인이고, 황진이의 위치는 조선시대이니만큼 이에 따른 종교적인, 또한 사회적인 차이가 없지 않다. 특히, 가톨릭의 강한 죄의식에 둘러싸인 돈 주앙의 신화는 구원과 벌의 개념에 의지하는 반면에, 황진이는 자유의 상징 이미지를 지니고 있다.
