초록
Jean Rhys's inter-war European texts feature thematic regularity, addressing the issue of commodification of the female body in the urban modern context. Voyage in the Dark (1934), a narrative of a destitute and socially displaced girl's entry into prostitution, stands as a prime example of this trend. The novel is clearly in tandem with the writer's other earlier works, engaged with a representation of the demi-monde and transgressions of the sexual code in bourgeois society. Yet what makes Voyage in the Dark particularly distinguished is that here sex is investigated as a charged socio-political terrain in which multiple determinants of social forces interact with each other. That is, the novel delineates the condition of the sexual transaction as implicated with the superimposition of the triple factors of gender, class and colonialism, ultimately presenting Rhys's singularly oppressive vision of female engagement with urban commercial culture.
