전자 제품 사용 설명서의 문장 표현 분석 –테크니컬 라이팅의 실제–

본고에서는 전자 제품 사용 설명서의 문장 표현을 대상으로 형식적 측면과 내용적 측면에서 나타나는 특성과 문제점을 살펴보았다. 우선, 문장 표현의 형식적 측면에서는 문장 성분이 분리되지 않거나 누락되는 문제, 문장의 호응이 어색한 문제를 살펴보았고, 접속 구조에서 복수의 항목들이 나열될 때 어휘의 배열과 문장의 구조가 잘못된 문제와 어색하고 과도한 명사구 표현이 자주 사용되는 문제를 살펴보았다. 이러한 문제들은 전자 제품 개발이라는 전문 영역에서 관습화된 문체나 용어를 사용한 결과인 경우가 많다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 다음으로 문장 표현의 내용적 측면에서는 중의적 해석이 가능한 문장으로 표현하거나 필수적으로 포함되어야 할 정보가 누락되어 정보가 불명확하게 전달되는 문제를 살펴보았고, 제품의 설치, 조작, 문제 해결 등을 위해 사용자가 필수적으로 따라야 하는 과정과 절차에 대해 정확한 시간적 선후 관계나 논리적 인과 관계를 적절하게 제시하지 못하는 문제를 살펴보았다. 사용 설명서의 문장 표현에서 나타나는 문제점들은 일반적인 텍스트에서 발견되는 것들과 본질적으로 다른 것은 아니지만 실제 현업에서 활동 중인 테크니컬 라이터들이 작성한 문장들을 살펴 그들이 어떤 부분에서 반복적인 오류를 범하고 있는지, 어떤 부분을 특히 어려워하는지를 찾아볼 수 있었다. 이를 통해 단순히 문법적인 오류 유형을 분류하는 것에서 나아가 내용적 차원에서 문장의 의미적 응집성과 논리성을 갖출 수 있는 방안들을 제시하고자 하였다. 사용 설명서 작성은 고도화된 전자 제품에 대한 과학 기술적 전문성과 그것을 일반인들에게 적절하게 설명할 수 있는 테크니컬 라이팅 실력이 함께 필요한 작업이기 때문이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics and problems that appear in the sentence expression of the user’s manual by dividing them into formal and content aspects. First of all, Problems related to the argument structure often include awkward sentence response, omission of sentence components, and selection of inappropriate predicates. As for the connection structure, when multiple elements are listed, the arrangement of vocabulary and the structure of sentences are often wrong, and the problem of frequently using awkward and excessive noun phrase expressions is often seen. These problems are often due to the use of customary style or terminology in the specialized field of electronic product development. In addition, even if there is no particular grammatical error, there are also problems that appear because the content to be conveyed is ambiguous or unclear. For example, it is a case in which information that must be expressed in a sentence that can be interpreted ambiguously or essential information is omitted, and an accurate temporal precedence or logical causal relationship cannot be properly presented for a process that the user must follow. These problems are not fundamentally different from those found in general texts, but by examining the sentences written by technical writers who are actually active in the field, it was possible to find out where they were making repeated errors and what parts they were particularly difficult about. Through this, we tried to suggest ways to have semantic cohesion and logic in sentences, going beyond simply classifying grammatical error types. This is because creating user manuals is a task that requires both scientific and technological expertise for advanced electronic products and technical writing skills to properly explain them to the general public.
