성별, 연령 및 담화 상황에 따른 시간 벌기 담화표지 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 사용 차이

이 연구에서는 구어 자료를 이용하여 시간 벌기 기능을 하는 담화표지 ‘어’와 ‘음’이 성별, 연령 및 담화 상황과 같은 사회언어학적 요인에 의해 어떠한 사용의 차이가 있는지를 조사하였다. 먼저 자료에 나타난 시간 벌기 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 전체 출현 빈도를 분석한 결과, ‘음’보다 ‘어’의 빈도가 높게 나타났다. 성별에 따른 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 사용 양상은 남녀의 차이가 거의 없이 유사하게 실현되었다. 연령별 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 사용의 차이는 연령대가 가장 높은 화자들이 연령대가 낮은 화자들에 비해 상대적으로 ‘어’의 사용이 많고 ‘음’의 사용이 적었지만 그 차이가 크지 않았다. 담화 상황에 따른 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 사용 차이는 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 두 담화에서 모두 ‘어’가 ‘음’보다 높은 사용 빈도를 보였지만, 공적 담화에서는 사적 담화에서보다 ‘어’의 사용이 더 높고 ‘음’의 사용이 더 낮게 나타났다. 또한 공적 담화 내의 경우, 토론에서는 강연·강의에서보다 ‘음’의 사용이 더 낮았다. 공적 담화에서 시간 벌기 ‘음’을 잘 사용하지 않는 이유를 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 말소리의 실현의 차이와 ‘음’에 고민이나 망설임 등을 드러내는 기능이 두드러지게 나타나는 것과 유관한 것으로 해석하였다.
Abstract
This study used spoken language data to investigate whether differences in the use of the Korean discourse markers ‘uh’ and ‘um’, which function as time-gain, appear due to sociolinguistic variables of gender, age and discourse situation. As a result of analyzing the frequency of ‘uh’ and ‘um’, the frequency of ‘uh’ was found to be higher than that of ‘um’. The usage patterns of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ according to gender were similar. The difference in the use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ by age was that in each discourse, speakers with the highest age used more ‘uh’ and less ‘um’ than speakers with lower ages. However, because the difference was not large, there was no significant. The use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ showed significant differences depending on the discourse situations. Although ‘uh’ was used more than ‘um’ in both discourse situations, the difference between the use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ was greater in public discourse. Additionally, the difference in the use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ was more noticeable in TV debates than in lectures in public discourse.
