초록
Recent increase of critical interest in hemispheric, transatlantic, and Pacific Rim studies represents that the field of American literary studies is undergoing a reconfiguration, which Heise refers to as the “transnational turn.” This paper reads Ruth Ozeki's My Year of Meats in the transnational context and examines its importance as Asian American literature in the changing landscape of American literary studies in an era of globalization. The expanding economy in a new global era increases the demand of mixed race people, who are uniquely suited to the niche as intermediary managers in transnational boundaries. They may end up as a ‘cultural pimp’ selling off the illusion of America to their parent country or explore a new role, like Jane Takigi-Little, “straddling” and bridging transnational boundaries and breaking an alternative ground out of the diverse ‘betweens.’ Jane, who produces a Japanese television show(My American Wife!) sponsored by BEEF-EX lobbing for American meat exporting business, discovers some unsavory truths about the meat business, wants to tell them to effect change and make a difference, and finally succeeds. She bridges the ‘betweens’ and opens a new possibility of emotional solidarity between Akiko, a Japanese woman sexually and psychologically abused by her husband, and the minority ethnic people, among whom Akiko finds a sense of belonging.
