Abstract

With the rise of scientific thinking and technological advancement, it was once predicted that folk beliefs would eventually fade into history. However, folk beliefs remain resilient and are now actively transmitted in a new environment—the internet, a technology-based space. This emerging transmission environment affects not only the rituals but also the content of transmission. This study examines how Samsin belief, particularly knowledge surrounding its rituals, is transmitted and reconstructed online, focusing on the Korean online parenting community <Moms Holic Baby>. Through this analysis, the study aims to explore the folk significance of newly constituted ritual norms. Ritual knowledge regarding Samsin can largely be categorized into three types: experiential knowledge, expert-authored texts, and non-expert- authored texts. While expert writings carry authority, they often lack sufficient detail for practical knowledge of ritual performance. As a result, members of online communities like <Moms Holic Baby> engage in collective discussion and feedback, synthesizing various types of knowledge into a community-generated “ritual manual” for Samsin. Chapter 3 compares these reconstructed manuals to traditional Samsin rituals. Although some conventional knowledge is preserved, new norms have emerged, and previously significant taboos have often been abandoned. Members collaboratively establish even the minute details of ritual practice through shared experience and information exchange. This study argues that the reconstruction of ritual norms in digital space is shaped not only by the characteristics of the internet but also by broader cultural factors: the anxiety and comparison-driven culture of parenting in Korea, the pursuit of “correct answers” endorsed by the community, and the ritual sensibilities of new agents of transmission, particularly MZ generation mothers. In other words, the transformation of folk beliefs in digital contexts results from a complex interplay of technological, cultural, and generational factors. To understand folk religion in the internet era, this study emphasizes the need to examine both the concrete transmission platforms and the characteristics of new transmitters.
