Abstract

Theoretical backgrounds, therapeutic efficacy, and practical procedures were reviewed to compare behaviour with cognitive therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder. Exposure and response prevention showed superior therapeutic effect in terms of both acute symptom reduction and long-term outcomes. Though cognitive therapy needs more empirical data, it has some benefits for the patients to whom ERP is not applicable or less effective, such as the patients with pure obsessions, aggressive urges, or mental rituals. According with recent development in neuropsychology and functional neuroimaging techniques, cognitive process model is one of most promising areas expected to solve OCD puzzles. Future studies should be directed to answer the question, ‘”To whom what therapy?”
