Abstract

Despite of the enthusiastic efforts of mobile banking providers, the number of customers who have switched from existing banking channels to mobile banking is below the expectation and thus the future of mobile banking seems to be dubious. Our research aims to enhance the understanding of mechanisms associated with customers’ intention to switch current banking services, or “intention of mobile banking switching” (IMS). A model including key variables pertaining to customer satisfaction with existing banking services, perceived usefulness, and switching cost, which are identified through the investigation of the migration research in human geography literature, are examined to explain the dynamics of IMS. Specifically, the model represents that the three variables directly affect IMS and that the variables perceived usefulness and switching cost moderate the association between customer satisfaction and IMS. An empirical study based on 455 survey responses confirmed the vital importance of perceived usefulness for service switching. The variables switching cost and customer satisfaction with existing banking services demonstrated strong association with IMS as well. We found that the moderating effect of perceived usefulness on the relationship between customer satisfaction and IMS is statistically significant. However, switching cost did not play a moderating role, which indicates a general inability of switching cost to weaken the association between customer satisfaction and IMS. We finally discusses the theoretical and the practical implications.
