Abstract
Theory of mind(ToM) refers to the capacity to infer one's own and other person's mental states such as thoughts, beliefs, and desires. Interest in this human ability has engendered a substantial body of research concerning its evolution and development and the biological basis of the mechanisms underpinning it. Functional neuroimaging studies have been undertaken to isolate the neural substrates of mentalizing ability. These have demonstrated that three brain areas - the medial prefrontal cortex, the superior temporal sulcus, and the temporal pole - are consistently activated in association with ToM. In fact, impaired ToM has been described in a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, for instance, autistic spectrum disorder, patients with frontal lobe damage, frontotemporal dementia, bipolar affective disorder, antisocial personality disorder and schizophrenia. There is a growing body of evidence that ToM specifically impaired in schizophrenia. It is likely that schizophrenic patients with negative symptoms were the most severely impaired in ToM, in particular when the symptomatology resembles that of autism. However, it is still under debate how an impaired ToM in schizophrenia is related to other aspects of cognition, whether this represents a state or trait variable, and how this affects the patients' use of language. We expect that the understanding of ToM mechanism would serve as guide for treatment and rehabilitation of schizophrenia.
