Abstract
In this paper, I analyzed effects of various explanatory variables including fund internal factors, macroeconomic factors, and asset market factors on the real investment returns of the private pension funds from 27 OECD countries during the sample period of 2008 to 2019 using panel data regression framework. Major findings are summarized as bellows. Primarily, growth of private pension assets and equity weights of the invested funds are shown to affect positively to the real performance of the pension funds with some exceptions in the chosen models of panel data regression procedures. The degree of pension fund maturity chosen as pension fund asset to GDP ratio is shown to have a strong positive role in accelerating fund performance in the all adopted econometric models, ensuring economies of scale. Secondly, among the 4 macroeconomic variables closely related with pension funds, elderly population has a negative influence on the real profitability of private pension funds which is contradictory to the prior research that elderly population has rather a motivating than discouraging effect on the world major 6 big public pension performance by Kim, Cin, and Jeong(2020). Contrary to the prior expectations real economic growth is also shown to have a negative impact on the real performance of private pension assets, which can be explained as such that excessive financial deregulation and household credits together with the boom in the capital market can be obstacles to the overall economic growth as shown in Cournede and Denk(2015). Household debt is shown to have a significant positive effect on the fund performance which is also opposite from the general expectations but similar to Cournede and Denk(2015). Inflation is shown to be negative which can be said although trivial. Finally, among asset market variables domestic and world stock performances have the strongest positive impacts on the private pension fund market returns and the domestic long-term bond yield turns out to be negative as expected.
