Abstract
This study is aimed at finding out the determinants of the gold-silver ratio, as it is noted that there was a certain tendency between the gold and silver exchange ratio like the other assets. There are various factors that determine the gold-silver ratio, such as supply and demand, and macroeconomic variables representing financial conditions. This study assumed that preference for safe assets in the financial market is a major determinant of the gold-silver ratio. In other words, the gold-silver ratio is expected to rise during the economic recession in the conjuncture of rising preference for safe assets such as economic recession, national conflicts, and pandemics, etc. For instance, on the 26th of April 2020, the gold-silver ratio had reached up to 112 times as the investors’ anxiety surged by plummeting stock and oil prices, along with expanding volatility of financial markets due to the spread of COVID-19. Through the regression analysis and the empirical analysis using the GARCH model, the significance between the gold-silver ratio and the safe assets preference was found. It was confirmed that the gold-silver ratio increased in the phase of rising preference for safe assets, while it decreased in the phase of rising preference for risky assets. The results of this study can be utilized to develop financial products using the gold-silver ratio, as well as a hedge or a trading means.
