Abstract

This article seeks to provide insight into what happens to the translation of L'enfant de Sable by Moroccan author Tahar Ben Jelloun. By analyzing the work translated into two languages, we explore the novel’s unique features: bilingualism and sexual ambivalence. First, the article argues the role of bilingualism in the translations. Though he is from Maghreb, Ben Jelloun writes in French, not Arabic. Creating his works within the historical and conventional context of decolonization, the author maintains that French is the language of literature. The novel, set in Marrakech, contains many French words of Arabic origin and culture-specific items that provide an exotic touch. Our research interest lies in the translation of these cultural expressions. When literature from so-called exotic cultures is translated, the translator, far from being invisible, usually intervenes in footnotes or by omission. Second, we explore the translation of sexual ambivalence, the theme of the novel. L'enfant de Sable tells the story of Zahra, who as eighth daughter must assume the role of a son called Ahmed, as according to tradition, the lack of a son not only shames the father but also causes his property to pass to his brothers. The father, Hajji, decides on a bold step: The next time his wife becomes pregnant, he will pretend the child is a son. The secret is kept by Hajji, his wife, and the midwife, and before long, he has almost convinced himself that he has a true son. Ahmed becomes confused about his gender identity as he grows physically and faces marriage. The theme of sexual ambivalence can be found in this part. Eventually, Ahmed decides to set out on a journey to find his identity. The narrative is constructed around gender-based binary opposition. In addition, throughout the story, the author is criticized for reinforcing stereotypes of the traditionalism of Morocco. We seek to provide insight into what happens to this ambivalence in translation, and we propose that the struggle may be associated with grammatical differences, such as the gender of French nouns.
