Abstract

In the contemporary era of globalization, world literature discourse has become deeply intertwined with the concept of a ‘borderless world.’ Especially, the monolingual tendency centered on translation into global English fosters the illusion of a world without borders. This perspective overlooks two crucial facts: first, that language inherently engages with the world, and second, that language is intrinsically hybrid and cannot be reduced to a single, uniform entity. This paper aims to illuminate these overlooked aspects of monolingual world literature by focusing on Edward Said's linguistic perspectives on ‘worldliness’ and ‘historical interdependence of languages.’ Said’s early work, Beginnings, emphasizes the materiality of language, yet subsequent the movement of deconstruction has led to a renewed separation between language and the world. In response, Said's The World, the Text, and the Critic and Orientalism advocate for a conception of worldliness that considers the interconnected power dynamics between the world, texts, and critics. Acknowledging critiques of Orientalism for contributing to the decline of research on non-Western languages, Said returns to philology, arguing for the repositioning of language within the global context not merely exploring the world within language. This perspective advances the idea of the historical interdependence of languages, which critiques both monolingualism as a foreign language ideology and nationalist monolingualism. Said's framework rejects imperialistic border-crossing and instead offers a vision of genuine one, emphasizing the hybrid, interdependent nature of languages within global realities.
