Abstract
The theory of world literature has reemerged in response to the academic changes caused by the globalization of capitalist economy and culture since the collapse of socialism in 1989. World literature scholars, such as Franco Moretti, Pascal Casanova, and David Damrosh, criticize the existing comparative literary studies based on the influence relationship of more than two national literatures and argue for the systemic analysis of transnational literatures. However, today, what becomes more important in the discussion of world literature is the role of commercial publishing markets around world literature, growing in the global level. Above all, they has a great influence on the issues of translation and language around world literature: translation is required to be more transparent for consumption and distribution, and language to be non-political, delocalized and abstract. This situation urges world literature to be more centered on English and more monolingual. But it tends to overlook the linguistic reality and experience in postcolonial situation in which we have still lived. In terms of cosmopolitanism from below, what is crucial when peripheral people moves to the metropolitan countries is the problem of language, translation, and identity. For identity and language to them are problems of survival related with psychic and linguistic anxiety. In particular, the processes of migration and translation still bear the legacy of (post)colonialism and are not free from its bridle. They still cannot escape from the unequal power relations between the core and the periphery, empire and colony, and the city and the country. Therefore, facing the central or metropolitan language as a foreign language, they are obliged to construct their own language in the in-between and interstitial space between their native languages and foreign languages. This reality enables people to have a critical view of the monolingualism of both metropolitan language and national language. We need to understand that metropolitan and national languages are always newly constructed in the relationship of compromise and translation with other languages, rather than a single linguistic formation. These processes will be critically examined in this paper.
