Abstract

This paper examines the generic specificity of love poetry in Russian literary history, designating it as anti-love poetry, and explores this concept primarily through the works of Pushkin and Brodsky. In Russian poets’ love poetry, the theme often centers not on the fulfillment of love but on love’s failure and impossibility. This is sometimes combined with issues concerning the poets’ attitudes toward poetry and life. For Pushkin, representing the Golden Age of Russian literature, love initially appears alongside youthful Romantic ideals, but its meaning and function soon undergo transformation. In the epistemic structure of 18th-century Russian literature, where odes monopolized religious-political authority, love poetry could only exist through the elegiac theme of loss and narrative distance. Pushkin creatively appropriates these generic constraints. Through love's impossibility, he gave form to the discord between poet and era. In his love poetry, love often exists in the past tense, and in Eugene Onegin, subtitled “a novel in verse,” love is sacrificed for life. Sometimes love conflicts with the poet’s social mission. This is also true for Russian revolutionary poets like Blok and Mayakovsky, in whose poetry love is sacrificed for revolution. By the late 20th century, with Brodsky, love’s impossibility converges into the linguistic problem of the exiled poet. Sometimes he parodies Pushkin’s love poetry, deconstructing the genre of love poetry itself. For the poet who lost his native language as an exile, love became identical with language and poetry through metapoetic reflection. Russian love poetry thus oscillates between individual and community, private and public spheres, while singing of love's impossibility. For many Russian poets, including Pushkin and Brodsky, who had to live through particular biographical circumstances, love poetry always maintains close relationships with their social conditions. This paper examines the specificity of Russian anti-love poetry—more precisely, poetry that speaks of love by subverting conventional love poetry.
