Abstract

A.S. Pushkin is a poet who led the most congruent life in terms of his private life and the artistic perfection of his work, and who embodied the means of art, inspiration, and personal creative freedom in the Russian cultural tradition. In his poetry we find numerous expressions that reveal sharp insights and temporal acumen even in simple poems. The poet is a prophet, proclaiming the truth to the people of this world in the name of the highest authority. However, the poet is also an artist in pursuit of artistic perfection, rejecting aesthetic, ideological and social coercion. He is a poet-artist-prophet who follows the command of the supreme value and pursues the noble human freedom. Regarding the themes of poetry and freedom, the poem <The Poet and the Crowd (Поэт и толпа)>(1828) poses special and complex debate in terms of interpretation of its meaning. This is because of the two opposing interpretations; one as a mockery of the poor people and the other as a severe condemnation of the secular society. The tragedy of art in society is conditioned by the inner nature of art itself and the eternal clash between the artist and the reader. Pushkin, by divine inspiration, created a poet who would set the souls of men on fire, and a crowd that did not fully understand its sound. Because the ‘crowd’ does not have an inner enlightenment, it does not accept the spiritual meaning of the verse, nor does it understand the noblest vocation of poetry to illuminate the inner world. True art is not for the selfish masses or crowds, but for those who possess spiritual freedom.
