1948년 사뮈엘 베케트의 프랑스어판 『고도를 기다리며』의 출간, 그리고 1953년 파리 바빌론 극장에서 이 극의 초연은 현대 연극사의 기념비적 사건이다. 부조리극의 출현 및 ‘고 도’의 탄생이 그것이다. 2차대전 이후 세계 연극의 판도를 바꾼 이 극은 임영웅 연출로 1969 년 국내 초연되었고, 이후 임영웅이 창단한 극단 산울림에 의해 현재까지 50년이 넘게 공연되 며 오늘에 이른다. 극단 산울림의 『고도를 기다리며』는 원작에 충실한 한국어 번역이다. 한편 1960년대를 기점으로 베케트 원작에 대한 일종의 ‘속편’ 성격의 번역·각색·개작·재창작 노력이 전 세계에서 다양한 언어로 이루어져 왔음이 발견된다. 한국에서도 특히 2000년대 이 후 뉴밀레니엄에 접어들어 원작에 대한 기발하고 도발적인 재해석 및 다시 쓰기가 시도되었 으며 이러한 경향은 현재진행형이다. 본 연구는 연출가 임영웅 및 극단 산울림의 공연 이력을 중심으로 한국어판 『고도를 기다리며』의 국내외 수용사를 추적하고자 한다. 아울러 본 연 구는 뉴밀레니엄 시대 한국에서 『고도를 기다리며』가 새로운 감수성으로 재해석 되고 다 시 쓰이면서 더욱 다채로운 수용 및 변용 양상을 보이고 있음을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
The publication of Samuel Beckett’s French version of Waiting for Godot in 1948 and its premiere at the Théâtre de Babylone in 1953 are monumental events in the history of modern theater. They are the emergence of the Theatre of the Absurd and the birth of ‘Godot.’ This play, which changed the landscape of the world theater after World War II, was first performed in Korea in 1969 under the direction of Lim Young-woong, and has been performed by the Sanwoolim Theater Company, founded by Lim Young-woong, for over 50 years to date. Sanwoolim’s Waiting for Godot is a Korean translation that is faithful to the original. Meanwhile, efforts to translate/adapt/rewrite/recreate Beckett’s original work as a kind of sequel have been made in various languages around the world since the 1960s. In Korea as well, especially since the 2000s, novel and provocative reinterpretations and rewritings of the original work have been attempted, and this trend is still ongoing. This study traces the domestic and international reception of the Korean version of Waiting for Godot, focusing on the performance history of director Lim Young-woong and the Sanwoolim Theater Company. In addition, this study examines that Waiting for Godot is undergoing a more diverse reception and variation pattern as it is reinterpreted and rewritten with new sensibilities in Korea in the new millennium era.
