Abstract

The purpose of this writing was to review the possibilities of writing and reading in the digital age. Digital information system has changed the concept of a writer as well as that of writing. The former has been expanded to the designer and graphic professional because the writer has been in charge of arranging and composing multimedia elements as well as the writing in digital environment. Digital cultural environment has also changed the concept of reading and readers. The concept of readers has been expanded to that of 'co-authors' and it literally meant that they were authors as well as readers. Digital texts have been open and interactional so that readers could both read and write them. Therefore, the readers were supposed to find out their own routes in reading. Writing could earn a new way of communication in such a new environment. First, one could directly revive the visual image in the moving image as well as letter texts so that one could have more sensually-oriented communication with others. Second, one could create a mixed form of text, in which individual media and readers and authors could be one. The interaction between readers and authors could be enhanced in the digital age the combination of writing and reading could be concretely embodied. In this aspect, the strict distinction between writing and reading would be meaningless. If one accepted the development of future digital environment as 'ubiquitous system,' the writing would become more interactional and reader-oriented.
