디지털 매체 시대의 읽기와 해석학의 과제

Abstract

This paper tracks the changes in writing and reading as writing technology transfers from printed papers to digital media. How is reading and writing changing through reading an electronic books with a digital device, exchanging short messages or emails, writing and editing texts with computers, searching information from all around the world through Internet search engines, and accessing different information as indicated in the links? Clearly our writing space has changed dramatically and is changing with the implementing of digital technology. Hypertexts of digital media is more open than print texts in the aspects that they do not impose a single channel of reading, but rather allows readers to find their own ways in a free and active manner to read texts. However on the other hand, this possibility provided by hypertexts puts reading itself in difficulties. We feel lost with an infinite amount of possible choices. Different from the traditional text reading, this feeling of difficulty that is created by hypertext reading is caused since digital media makes chronological time of past, present and future meaningless. In a life where everything is dominated by digital media, as spatiotemporal interval of experience and the vacancy disappears, the “deep Attention” for creative reading process becomes extinct. This paper shed light on the point that the possibility in “in-depth” reading of texts, by accepting inevitable changes of digital media, can be found in the point where digital media and print media is intermediated.
