Abstract

The folk ballads are the local literature which have been created and transmitted by the local women of the lower class. The folk ballads of a certain district have been localized through the creation and combination with the folk ballads in other districts. This paper investigated the transmission aspects and cultural characteristics of folk ballads focused on the works in the Gangwon district. Futhermore, I surveyed the aspects of localization of folk ballads through the combination of motifs, the alteration of the function and the change of the singing method. The Gangwon district is adjacent to the Youngnam district which is the center of transmission of folk ballads. Therefore the folk ballads of Gangwon district have been affected by the folk ballads of Youngnam district. The nation-wide types have been transmitted in the Gangwon district mainly. Especially, the Ai, Ca, Cb, Me types have been transmitted most briskly. These types are the local ones that account for a great part of the Gangwon folk ballads and fitted out with the organic structure. The folk ballads have been sung as the weaving songs. However, they have been transferred into the other work songs and play songs in the Gangwon district. Moreover, the various motifs have been modified and combined according to the emotion of the local people. As the result, the folk ballads in the Gangwon district have been deviated from the formal and stereo types. They have been varied and could have become the local literature through the creation and combination of the local people.
