충청 지역 서사민요의 전승양상과 문화적 특질

서사민요 연구는 그 장르의 중요성과 가치에 비해 상대적으로 연구가 매우 소원한 편이다. 더욱이 충청 지역의 서사민요에 대한 연구는 전혀 이루어지지 않은 상태에 있었다. 이 연구에서는 충청 지역 서사민요를 대상으로 그 전승양상과 유형별 특징, 문화적 특질 등을 살펴보았다. 충청 지역에는 서사민요의 자료수가 영남이나 호남 지역에 비해 그리 풍부하지 않은데다가 지금까지 파악된 61개 유형 중에서 29개 유형만이 전승되고 있다. 특히 다른 지역에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 시집식구와 며느리 관계 유형이 남편과 아내 관계 유형이나 남자와 여자 관계 유형보다 전승이 활발하지 않은 것을 볼 수 있다. 이는 충청 지역이 다른 지역에 비해 서사민요를 자유롭게 향유하고 전승할 수 있는 여건이 충분하게 조성되지 못했기 때문에 나타난 양상이라 생각된다. 조사된 자료를 분석한 결과 충청 지역 서사민요는 수적으로 풍부하지 않다 할지라도 내용상으로는 다른 지역에서는 잘 나타나지 않는 독특한 모티브가 많이 보일 뿐만 아니라 자존의식과 당당한 태도 등이 잘 드러나 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 특히 남자와 여자 관계를 다룬 유형은 자유롭고 개방적인 성 의식을 보이고 있어 주목된다. 이는 충청 지역이 예로부터 양반의 고장으로 불릴 만큼 양반 의식이 전반적인 사회 분위기를 보이는 데 비해, 서사민요 속에서는 이로부터 일탈하고자 하는 욕망과 기대가 숨김없이 표현되고 있음을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 충청 지역 서사민요에는 일의 과정이나 순서를 나열하는 교술적 성격을 지닌 노래가 많이 전승될 뿐만 아니라, 대부분 허구적이고 행복한 결말로 마무리하려는 경향을 지니고 있음도 알 수 있었다. 이 연구는 전국 서사민요의 전승양상과 특질을 밝히기 위한 기본 토대로 이루어진 것이다. 앞으로 이를 바탕으로 충청 지역과 호남 지역, 충청 지역과 영남 지역, 호남 지역과 영남 지역 등, 지역과 지역의 서사민요의 비교뿐만 아니라, 한국 서사민요 전체의 전승양상과 문화적 특질을 밝히는 데로 확대해 나가야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper investigated the transmission aspects and cultural characteristics of folk ballads focused on the works in Chungcheong district. Chungcheong district does not have the abundant folk ballads comparing with Jeonnam or Geoungbuk District. Only 29 types are transmitted of 61 types. The type of relation between husband's family and a daughter in law which is transmitted the most abundantly in other districts is not transmitted briskly. The type of relation between the husband and wife or man and woman is transmitted more briskly. That's the reason why Chungcheong district doesn't have the sufficient circumstances that could make folk ballads created and transmitted. Even though folk ballads does not abound in Chungcheong districts, they have unique motifs that don't appear in other districts. They also express the self respect consciousness and confident attitude. The type of relation between man and woman shows the liberal and open consciousness about sexual relation. To be contrast with that Chungcheong district is the traditional Yangban society, folk ballads reveal the desire and hope to escape from this authoritative circumstances. Folk ballads in Chungcheong district are inclined to be so didactic that enumerate the process of a work or part of a material. And they usually finish with the happy and fictional ending. The cultural characteristics that folk ballads in Chungcheong district have are as follows;They reveal knowledge instead of emotion, they deal with compromise more importantly than conflict, and they prefer the happy ending to the miserable ending. We ought to give a careful consideration to generalize the result of this study, because I examined only works of Chungcheong district. In order to get the definite result, we should expand investigation of folk ballads to the all districts and compare the existent aspects of folk ballads in districts. I look forward to succeeding the study of folk ballads more briskly.
