『독립신문』수록 단형 서사와 ‘설(說)’ 문학의 연계성 고찰 - ‘문답체’ 서사를 통해 드러나는 서술 특징을 중심으로 -

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the relations between seol, a genre of traditional literature and short narrative in Doklip newspaper during the transitional period to modern times (between the 1890s ~ the 1910s). Existing studies have focused on the links between the short narrative and Yadam (unofficial version of historical tales) or short stories in classical Chinese. The short narrative has an objective very different from Yadam and short stories in classical Chinese: the former has editorial characteristics while the latter basically puts a focus on a literary value. Against the background, the paper has conducted a comparative study of the short narrative and seol based on the observation in which the two genres have the same objective. In particular, the paper takes note of their commonality in terms of structure, and narrative featuring a series of questions and answers. Both of them have the feature of the narrative in which a character who controls the ideology of the times leads the theme. Compared to seol, the aspects of debate are more pronounced than the ones of discussion in the short narrative, a genre created when ideology was emphasized. Although some changes were shown in such commonality depending on the times, its attributes serve as a ground to find close links between the two genres.
