Abstract

The Dutch sailors arrived at Batavia from Texel in January 10, 1653. They received an order from East India Company which had to make a voyage to Tiwan by Sparrow Hawk. A sailor, Hendrick Hamel was the secretary of Sparrow Hawk belonging to East India Company. The sailors including Hendrick Hamel arrived at the vicinity of Mosŭlpo through the Taiwan Strait, because of victim of a terrible typhoon on the southern coast of Cheju Island in August 16, 1853. Among 64 sailors, many of the thirty-six survivors were seriously injured. They arrived at Taejŏng, and went to Mokkwan in August 21, 1853. Afterward they lived in the vicinity for 9 months which King Kwanghae was sent in the exile on Cheju Island. The sailors all had lived in Cheju Island for 10 months. They reached at Seoul in July 26, 1654. In so far as their circumstances permitted, they were able to lead normal lives on all occasions but one, and that was when a Manchu embassy was in Seoul. They desperately tried to explain to the embassy in order to escape from Korea. So Korean government decided upon the excile to Cholla Do because of the Manchu Envoy Incident. Hendrick Hamel was sent to Cholla Pyongyong with his friends. In that time, The surgeon, Mathew Eibokken or Matheus Ibocken said that there was some crews who had married Korean girls. In Cholla Pyongyong, they divided into 3 parties, and Hendrick Hamel was gone to Chwasuyŏng. Hendrick Hamel escaped from Chwassuyŏng with his Dutch friends in Yŏ녀 and 3 in Sunchŏn in September 4, 1866. At last they reached at the opposite of the Island of Deshima. The questions was asked by the Governor of Nagasaki on their arrival. They reached at his country in July 20, 1668. Hendrick Hamel published An Account of the Shipwreck of a Dutch Vessel on the Coast of the Isle of Quelpaert together with the Description of the Kingdom of Corea to report his chief. It was written to the exile life for 13 years in Korea by him. It was translated into English by Chuchil in 1704. It is the first book which was introduced to Korea. So the westerners could recognize existence of Korea through it. Similarly Americans recognized Korea through Hamel's book.
