Abstract

This paper examines the views on imperialism and capitalism shown in Akutagawa’s later works, “Momotaro” “Kappa” “Shuju no kotoba”. Akutagawa observed China for 120 days as a correspondent in the early 20th century, the peak of imperialism He abandons his existing creative attitude and begins to write works that stares at the era. Who used to write while maintaining a certain distance from reality has changed drastically. Japan’s ambition for colonization aroused a sense of betrayal in China, and Akutagawa vividly experienced the scene. In the “Momotaro”, which is written after returning to Japan, there is a sharp criticism of Japan’s imperialist atrocities. In the “Kappa”, the 4th class created by monopoly capitalism, the problem of unemployment, and the tyranny of capitalists are being denounced. It depicts the reality that they are messing with politics and media with financial power.In the “Shuju no Kotoba” he takes a look at the mass society and the vulgar public. They are easy to blind following and regard creating arts and manufacturing products as the same value.
