Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine Western modernization, change in the perception of nature, the pursuit and greed of material omnipotence, and the separation of humans and nature, which were revealed in Miyazaki Hayao’s animation <The Spiriting Away Of Sen And Chihiro>. Through this discussion, we will try to understand the direction of modern society. The secret of the popularity of Miyazaki’s animation is that, through the myth of an ancient society where humans and nature were in harmony, vitality, communication, and sympathy that are difficult for modern people to experience in a complex urban civilization are being dealt with. In myths, rather than destroying nature due to conflict and confrontation between humans and nature, the story of human interaction and mutual coexistence with nature is presented. Modern people, who experience stress and pressure in urban civilization, realize the importance of traditional Japanese culture in which nature and humans communicated through Miyazaki’s animations. The animation <The Spiriting Away Of Sen And Chihiro> specifically reveals the reality of modern Japanese society by symbolically presenting elements of Western culture and traditional Japanese culture. Modern people perceive nature in terms of economic value due to excessive dependence on Western civilization. In terms of economic value, nature is recognized as an object of development rather than conservation. Such human greed cuts off the relationship between nature and human beings and requires awareness that it leads to pollution of nature and destruction of humans. In conclusion, the core of Miyazaki’s message is that human beings are inseparable from nature, a part of nature, and a symbiotic relationship.
