이 글에서는 김소진 사후에 출간된 짧은 소설집 『달팽이 사랑』에 실린 34편의 소설을 대상으로 소설의 주제와 그것을 형상화하는 표현의 특징을 살펴보았다. 짧은 소설은 소설 분류 방식에 따라 ‘엽편소설’이란 명칭으로 정의하고, 그 특징을 정리하였다. 김소진이 창작한 엽편소설의 특징은 유머와 위트, 아이러니와 극적 반전을 사용하여, 삶을 긍정하고 인간관계를 회복하기도 하며, 냉혹하고 부조리한 현실과 인정세태를 비판한다. 또한 우화적 구성과 긍정적 결말 구조를 사용하여 인간에게 필요한 가치와 덕목을 교훈하고 어려운 현실 속에서도 소설 속 인물들이 사랑을 회복하고 세상과 화해하게 한다. 김소진은 엽편소설을 통해 아무도 시선을 주지 않는 평범한 삶 속에 담긴 이야기나 사소한 갈등, 작은 담론들을 예리하게 포착해 낸다. 엽편소설의 형식이 아니라면 작은 모티프에 그쳤을 소설의 주제는 작가의 관심과 의식을 통해 선명하게 부각되고 작가 특유의 유머와 긍정적 시선을 통해 생동감 있게 살아난다. 결국 다양한 인간 군상과 세상에 대한 작가의 따뜻한 시선은 그의 엽편소설을 재미있고 감동있는 서사물로 만드는 원천이 된다. 김소진은 소설 플롯 구성이 자유롭고 간결하며 압축적으로 제시되어야 하는 엽편소설의 특징에 맞게 주제를 선명하게 드러낼 수 있는 소설적 기법을 효과적으로 사용하고 있다. 김소진이 엽편소설을 통해 보여준 작가의식과 소설 주제를 형상화하는 방식은 김소진 문학의 일반적 특징과도 긴밀하게 연관된다는 것을 알 수 있으며, 그의 문학세계를 온전히 이해하기 위해서는 엽편소설 전편에 대한 연구가 필요할 것이다.
Abstract
In this theses, I studied the characteristics of the themes and the methods of describing them in the collection of short-short stories, Love of Snail, which was consisted of 34 Short-short stories of Kim, So-Jin, who died of cancer in 1997. I categorized short-short stories as “Yuppyun-Sosul (a leaf-size length story, which means extremely short story) according by the type of story, and summarized the concept and features. Especially I classified Kim, So-Jin’s Short-short stories as four categories on the basis of themes and novel technic which give concrete shape to themes. Firstly, he usually described the agonies and sufferings of ordinary lives of common people, middle and low class in our society with the novel technic of humors and wits. He didn’t lose the positive attitude of lives even though the life was very hard and painful for the present. Secondly, his short-short stories were perfect pictures of our private and social life. He recognized the life conditions of human beings as vulgar reality. So he used irony and dramatic reversal in his short-short stories to describe the absurd and illogical circumstances of modern society. Thirdly, Kim, So-Jin used beast fables to give persons wisdom and moral lessons in his Short-short stories. This novel technic was very useful and specific method to describe various situations of human beings in the limited space and to give a strong impact by dint of the dialogues and actions of beast to sneer at the stupidity of man. Fourthly, in general, he wrote his novels with positive mind. Though the reality of human beings was very severe and harsh, the characters in his novels solved various problems with the empathetic understandings each other. So they recovered love and reconciled with world which gave them conflict. Kim, So-Jin used such novel technic of short-short stories effectively to express his consciousness as a writer, and to describe themes of novels. As these characteristics of novel technic in his short-short stories are related to those of his full-length novel and short stories, it is necessary to study all his short-short stories for more deep understanding of Kim, So-Jin’s literary world.
