『老年』は大正3年5月の雑誌『新思潮』に発表された芥川龍之介の短編である。物語は料理屋の「玉川軒」で一中節の発表会が開かれる雪の降る宵の口から始まる。「玉川軒」の楽隠居で引き取られている房さんの若いころの、心中沙汰がキーワードになっている。房さんは25歳の時の「心中沙汰」のことで相当の衝撃を受けたのであるが、これが原因で身上を潰し、だんだん衰えて行き、三度の飯も碌に食えない始末に迫られたのである。「玉川軒」での今現在の房さんの生活は往年の生活を立ち切ったようなものであると云う。房さんは25際の「心中沙汰」で人生の最初の憂き目に遭ったが、それは房さんの生涯において忘れられない、一大事であり、一つのこだわりとして60歳を超した今にも胸の中に秘めていたのである。それが語られる一中節によって、房さんの胸から浮かび上がったわけである。つまり、25際の時の「心中沙汰」は房さんの生涯において一瞬に打ち上がった輝かしい花火のような「刹那の感動」でもあったのである。それが「刹那の感動」であったために45年あまりの歳月が経った今にも、一中節の旋律に合わせて彼の胸から濛々と浮かび上がったのである。芥川は25歳に始まった色事と芸事を本掛返りになるまでに忘れずに、胸の中で続けて来た一点張りの房さんの肩を持っている。なお、彼の「刹那の感動」をも守ってあげる。芥川は房さんの姿に「芸術至上」を貫こうとする自分の作家生活への方向を示していたのである。
Abstract
“Ronen” is a short story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa published in the magazine ‘Shin Shicho’ in May 1914.The story begins at the beginning of a snowy evening when a presentation of Ichchu-bushi is held at the Tamagawa-ken restaurant.The keyword is Bousann’s love affair when he was young, who was taken over by the “Tamakawaken” raku retirement.Mr. Bousann was quite shocked by the “heartbreak” when he was twenty-five years old, but this caused him to lose his fortune and gradually decline, and he was forced to eat three times without enough food.It is said that Mr. Bousann’s present life at Tamagawa-ken is like the end of his old life. Mr.Bousann had the first trouble of his life when he was 25 years old, but it was an unforgettable and important thing in Bousann’s life, and one thing he kept in mind was that he was over sixty years old.It came to mind from Mr. Bousann’s heart through the Ichchu-bushi in which it was recite.In other words, at the age of twenty-five, the “heartbreak” was also a like a brilliant firework that burst out in an instant in Mr. Bosann’s life.It was the “impression of the moment,” and now, more than forty-five years have passed, it has risen thickly from his heart to the tune of the Ichchu-bushi. Akutagawa advocates Mr. Bousann with persistent man who never forgets the love affairs and the arts that began at the age of 25. I will also protect his “Momentary emotion.” Akutagawa showed the direction of his career as a writer who wanted to “Art supreme” in Bousann’s appearance.
