Abstract

“Mother” is a short story published in “Chuo-Koron” in September of the Taisho era. Akutagawa’s works often feature his mother. The mothers who appear in these works have feelings for Akutagawa’s own mother., but the two mothers who appear in this work are just meant to make use of Akutagawa’s theme, such as bystander egoism. The story is set in Shanghai, China, and the text consists of three chapters in total. The plot shows two mothers and both of them lose their babies, which depicts each other’s subtle psychology。First of all, Toshiko’s baby dies of pneumonia At first, the woman in the next room sympathized with Toshiko and showed her “depression,” but her sympathy soon disappeared and she looked like “another cheerful smile.”The woman sympathizes with Toshiko for the misfortune of losing her baby, but her feelings remain for a while, and it soon disappears and she feels normal. Then the normal mood changes to “a mischievous look,” that is, a malicious feeling. On the other hand, the baby in the next room dies under the same disease name, and Toshiko feels good about the baby’s death. She said to her husband, “Is it bad?” three times in total, saying that she was happy that the baby had died.Toshiko’s smile also reportedly made her feel “very insensate” and “something similar to a creepy power.” He felt Toshiko’s smile, “insensate,” “similar to a creepy power,” and “something beyond human power” are the egoism of a human bystander. This bystander egoism is the helpless and pitiful psychology that every human being has. Therefore, Akutagawa is said to be “not as good as human resources.” Akutagawa exposes the helpless and pitiful egoism of modern people through his two mothers.
