채만식은 한국 현대문학 초기에 가장 뛰어난 업적을 남긴 작가 중의 한 명이다. 그의 대표작품은 일제강점기의 부조리한 현실을 탁월한 감각과 풍자정신으로 담아냈다. 동시에 그의 친일 행적은 그의 문학적 업적에 지울 수 없는 오점으로 남아 있다. 그러나 작품을 통한 고백과 반성으로 인해 큰 비난을 받지는 않았는데 오히려 이러한 점이 그의 친일에 대한 깊이 있는 연구에 방해가 되고 있다. 친일 행위는 단지 반성으로만 끝내면 안 될 문제이다. 친일행위가 시작된 배경과 그것이 작가와 작품에 미친 영향을 종합적으로 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 특히 감정은 주체와 세계가 맺고 있는 관계의 성격을 잘 보여준다. 해방을 통해 채만식이 느낀 가장 큰 감정은 수치심이다. 해방을 예상하지 못했던 그는 친일행위라는 죄에 대해 거센 비난을 받았다. 채만식은 자신의 수치심을 극복하고 과거의 잘못을 은폐하기 위해 죄에 대한 판단을 유예하였다. 그리고 죄에 대한 처벌을 아직 오지 않은 미래로 영원히 지연시켰다. 그는 역사의 발전이나 정의의 실현과 같은 믿음을 모두 버리고 그 대신 인간에 대한 부정과 혐오를 강하게 느꼈다. 채만식의 친일 행위나 친일 작품의 경우 수치심과 그로 인한 변화에서 기인한다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Chae Man-sik is one of the writers who left the most outstanding achievements in the early days of Korean contemporary literature. His representative work captures the absurd reality of Japanese colonial era with an outstanding sense and satirical spirit. At the same time, his pro-Japanese behavior remains an indelible stain on his literary achievements. However, he was not severely criticized because of his confession and reflection through his works. Rather, this fact hinders in-depth research on his pro-Japanese activities. Pro-Japanese behavior is a problem that should not be ended only with reflection. It is important to comprehensively understand the background of the pro-Japanese act and its impact on the artist and work. Emotions show the nature of the relationship between the subject and the world. The biggest emotion that Chae Man-sik felt through liberation is shame. He, who had not expected liberation, was condemned for the crime of collaboration with Japan. In order to overcome his shame and conceal his past wrongdoings, Chae Man-sik suspended his judgment on sin. And it forever delayed the punishment for sin to the yet-to-be-come future. He abandoned all beliefs such as the development of history and the realization of justice. Instead, he strongly felt denial and hatred toward humans. In the case of Chae Man-sik’s pro-Japanese behavior or pro-Japanese works, it can be said that it is due to shame and the resulting changes.
