Abstract
This paper attempts to investigate the mission process of the Church of Christ in Japan, drawing on its frequent criticisms of the Japan Congregational Church found in the discourse of the Church of Christ in Japan regarding its mission in Korea. By analyzing the church’s official publication, Fukuinshinpō, this study examines the logic behind its criticism of the Japan Congregational Church and explores how the mission theories of the Church of Christ in Japan differ from those of the Japan Congregational Church. Five main conclusions were drawn from the study. First, in the early stages of its mission in Korea, the Church of Christ in Japan prioritized financial independence from foreign missionary organizations, adopting a cautious approach to both the decision and execution of the mission. Second, it expressed concerns and caution about the Japan Congregational Church’s expansion of Christian activities with a focus on the state and civilization. Third, the Church of Christ in Japan was more sensitive to Japan’s relationship with the West than with Asia. Fourth, it prioritized the identity of a Christian over that of a Japanese in its mission in Korea. Fifth, in response to the March 1st Movement, the Church of Christ in Japan criticized the Japan Congregational Church’s alliance of church and state in its proselytizing methods and resolved to adopt the principle of the separation of church and state in its mission in Korea.
