일제강점기 개신교 설교에 나타난 기독교 신앙과 민족ㆍ국가의식

Abstract

Early Korean protestant churches offered ideas and organizations to demolish confucian establishment of the late Choson and to build up new nation-state. In fact it leaded national movement for independence in the early colonial period. However when the March-First Movement failed and it seemed that Japanese colonial rule would last longer, Korean protestant churches withdrew from the national movement and collaborated actively with the National total mobilization system of Japanese colonial rule and the ‘Imperial Subjects Forming’ policy(so-called ‘Hwang-Kook-Shin-Min-Hwa’) in the late colonial period. This paper examines this shift into the line relating to the protestant preaching. Because the shift into the line certainly premises or accompanies the transformation of discourse and the most authoritative medium for protestant discourse would be preaching. For this reason this paper considers christian faith and national consciousness of protestant preaching in the period of Japanese occupation, dividing the period by the early and the late time with the collection of representative sermons of the churches of Choson to study their christian faith and national consciousness at that time. With this, it clarifies that while sermons in the early colonial period awakened christians about the reality of colonial Korea with christian transcendent faith and christian virtues like love and justice encouraging the change of life for national independence, sermons in the late colonial period turned into ‘otherworldly religion' with the distance from the national reality forcing fidelity for the state and regime, so-called state-ism, and promoting churchism(christianity) which emphasized allegiance to the organizations of churches. It means that the Christianity of Choson which was used to spread the gospel of liberation, became a part of the establishment separated from the original christian faith and an instrument for teaching pro-establishment discourse separated from reenacting the life of Christ.
