Abstract
· Research topics: The primary aim of this study is to examine virtual idols and their fandom's participatory culture through an analysis of the secondary creations produced by PLAVE fandom. · Research background: Virtual idols do not physically exist, and their interactions with fans occur through digital platforms, forming unique fandom relationships. In Korea, PLAVE leverages motion capture technology to implement real-time movements of characters and fosters a new participatory culture through communication with fans. This transformation diverges from traditional fandom dynamics, contributing to the formation of distinct community cultures where fans actively create and share content. This study is deemed timely as it addresses the implications of these changes. · Differences from prior research: Unlike existing research, this study focuses on secondary creations, an underexplored content area, to delve deeper into the interaction between idols and fandom and the impact of participatory culture. · Research method: The study employed in-depth interviews with fans who create secondary content and conducted surveys targeting fans who consume these creations. · Research results: The process of producing and consuming secondary creations plays a pivotal role in strengthening emotional bonds and a sense of belonging between fans and idols. The advancement of digital platforms enables fans to participate actively and communicate creatively, forming a new fandom culture. · Contribution points and expected effects: By analyzing the impact of participatory culture and creative communication through digital platforms on fandom strategies, the study proposes new models for fandom culture and interaction. It also offers insights into the future development of fandom strategies and digital content consumption models.
