Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between university students’ intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and intercultural effectiveness (IE). A survey was conducted among 410 students at a Japanese university. ICC was conceptualized as consisting of four subcomponents—attitude, knowledge, awareness, and skills—while IE was defined by continuous learning, interpersonal engagement, and hardiness. The analysis revealed that attitude, awareness, and skills had significant positive effects on the subcomponents of IE, whereas knowledge did not have a statistically significant influence. These results suggest that practical dimensions such as attitude, awareness, and skills may be more critical to the development of IE than knowledge alone. Among these, intercultural skills had the most significant impact. In light of these findings, an additional analysis was conducted based on a hypothetical model in which knowledge is posited as a predictor of attitude, awareness, and skills. The results showed that knowledge positively influenced these three variables, which in turn indirectly influenced IE. Overall, this study highlights the importance of intercultural education that goes beyond the mere transmission of knowledge and promotes its internalization into students’ attitudes and skills.
