Abstract

This study examines how Korean adolescents engage with Japanese animation and proposes a three-stage experiential model—Initiation, Deepening, and Integration—that captures the dynamic structure of this cultural reception process. Using focus group interviews with 28 students from elementary, middle, high schools, and universities in Gyeongnam Province, the study investigates initial exposure, emotional resonance, otaku-style participation, cultural expansion, and the negotiation of historical and political issues. The findings indicate that the initiation stage typically occurs through everyday media environments such as television, family viewing, and YouTube recommendations. In this phase, adolescents often encounter Japanese animation without conscious national awareness and develop “emotional proximity” through narrative appeal, visual style, and voice acting. In the deepening stage, repeated viewing, character attachment, merchandise consumption, fan art, and online community participation constitute forms of participatory otaku culture, while growth-oriented storylines strongly resonate with adolescents’ academic pressures and identity development. Participants also displayed critical reading strategies, distancing themselves from problematic elements such as sexualization, violence, and militaristic motifs. In the integration stage, interest expanded toward Japanese language learning, travel, and study-abroad intentions; however, learners simultaneously maintained a clear cognitive separation between cultural enjoyment and political–historical judgments, particularly regarding imperial history, territorial disputes, and right-wing controversies. These findings demonstrate that the reception of Japanese animation among Korean youth is not a simple cultural preference but a multilayered experience where emotion, identity, social belonging, creativity, criticism, and cultural mobility intersect. By modeling this process through qualitative data, the study offers valuable implications for future quantitative research, cultural policy, and media literacy education.
