Abstract
Woogye[牛溪]Seong Hon[成渾] (1535~1598) was a sanrim[山林] thinking of himself as one pursuing ‘Wigijihak[爲己之學]’. Recognizing he would not be able to be in government service for physical restrictions attributed to his disease, Woogye decided to succeed to the intention of ‘Anbinsudo[安貧修道], Eungeoguji[隱居求志]’ led by his family discipline. Regarding Jo Gwang-jo’s ‘Eungeosuji[隱居守志], Gangmyeongdohak[講明道學]’ as his academic goal, he went into retirement in Pa-san[坡山]and engaged in ‘Wigijihak[爲己之學]’. Woogye embodied his intention of seclusion and cultivation with some of the symbolic words of poetry. In Woogye’s poems, poetic words indicating seclusion symbolically are the Pa-san[坡山] and chrysanthemum. Pa-san was a hideout both physically and mentally to Woogye and symbolizes a place to practice ‘Anbinsudo[安貧修道], Eungeoguji[隱居求志]’, the tradition of his family discipline. The imagery of Woogye’s seclusion is also expressed with the chrysanthemum, the follower of seclusion. Woogye embodied the imagery of cultivation with water and the mountain. Water symbolizes the attitude of renewing and emptying oneself day by day through restless introspection in order to reach the state of purity and also represents a person of wisdom. Also, the mountain represents a person of benevolence equipped with the virtue of maturity. The ‘invariability[不變性]’ of a mountain refers to the resolute mind towards seclusion and cultivation. Woogye also projected the spiritual world of brightness and cleanness he pursued onto the moon in his poems. The moon symbolizes Woogye himself, that is, his truthful mind and clear mind.
