Abstract
This study investigates several features of interruptions, focusing on Chinese dramas, talk shows, and naturally occurring conversation data. Analyzing the frequencies, distributional properties, and interactional functions of interruptions, there was a significant difference according to the conversation genre. Analysis of the data shows that types of interruptions can be classified into four major categories: reactive interruptions; inadvertent interruptions, preferred interruptions, and dispreferred interruptions. The most frequent type of interruptions that took place on Chinese dramas were of the dispreferred type, while the most frequent type of interruptions that took place on Chinese talk shows were of the preferred type. The most frequent type of interruptions that took place on naturally occurring conversation data were of the reactive type. In contrast to the negative view of interruptions as being an impediment to the flow of conversation, the most frequent type of phenomena that occur in a conversation after an interruption were of the favorable type. The results show that the frequent interruption types in each conversation genre are not accidental and can be recommended to achieve the purpose of the conversation genre.
