Abstract
This paper diagnoses the issue of semantic confusion caused by homophones in the Hanyu Pinyin writing system and proposes a structural approach to address it. Unlike Chinese characters, which are visually oriented, Hanyu Pinyin is phonocentric and lacks the visual function necessary to distinguish homophonous words. Consequently, transcribing Chinese into Pinyin often leads to an increase in homophonous homographs, raising concerns about potential ambiguity in communication. Previous studies have largely focused on two major approaches: lexical differentiation, which replaces homophones with alternative words of different pronunciation, and graphemic modification, which introduces visual distinctions through letter insertions or typographic changes. This paper argues that such methods are fragmentary and insufficient as fundamental solutions. Instead, it highlights the need for a structural approach that considers the interrelationship between language and script, and the functional differences between spoken and written forms. Particularly, this study demonstrates that the orthographic rule of word-by-word spacing in Hanyu Pinyin can naturally resolve homophonic ambiguity by clarifying semantic boundaries within sentences. It also suggests that, when necessary, the selective use of Chinese characters alongside Pinyin can compensate for the limitations of the phonetic script, while gradually promoting a transition toward a fully Pinyin-based written form. In conclusion, this paper argues that the homophone problem in Hanyu Pinyin should be addressed through comprehensive reform across the broader linguistic system—specifically, the view of writing systems, the spoken–written language perspective, and the orthographic conventions of sentence composition. Through such systemic reform, it explores the potential for stabilizing the Pinyin script and realizing the feasibility of a “dual-script system” (一語雙文制) for the Chinese language.
