Abstract
In recent years, with the improvement of Chinese women’s social status and the rise of female consumer groups, films featuring women’s themes have gradually come to occupy an important position in China’s film market. Since their release in 2024, the films You Only Live Once and Her Story have attracted widespread attention from both Chinese society and academic circles. You Only Live Once and Her Story deconstruct the grand political narratives that often appeared in 20th-century Chinese women’s films, and instead start from women’s individual experiences to address the power structures that women face in contemporary society. While dismantling traditional gender power relations, these films also circumvent the male gaze and reconstruct female discourse. This can be seen as a form of progress in the history of Chinese women’s cinema. However, although these two films differ from the ‘chick flicks’ of previous years that directly promoted the value system of women’s consumption ↔ consuming women, in their efforts to align with contemporary female aesthetics and market logic, they inevitably fall into another trap of consumerism—something that is even more apparent in Her story. This also reveals the emerging dynamics and latent contradictions surrounding gender issues among China’s younger generation in recent years.
