Abstract

From the origin of human civilization to this day stones have been the objects of various beliefs in numerous cultural areas. Branching out from Amano-Iwato (天石屋戸), where Amaterasu (the Japanese solar deity) hid, the tales of mystical stones extend to Japanese myth. Based on the study for examining what these stones represent in Japanese mythology, the following characteristics could be found besides the archetypal symbol of stone as eternal life. First, the stone is recognized as a presence lying on the boundaries of dualistic world: life and death, light and darkness, and beauty and unsightliness. Second, the stone is often associated with Raijin(雷神, the god of lightning), who possesses divine abilities (呪力) in governing water. Rajin controls rainfall that is vital to agriculture and may give abundance and prosperity to humans. However, when enraged, Rajin can bring about terrible disasters. Third, with respect to the Empress Jingu Legends, the stone assists the empress in conquering Silla and establishing royal authority. Empress Jingu was in her last month of pregnancy when she rose to the conquest of Silla and she controlled the time of her delivery with the stone. With this power, the myth that Empress Jingu is the descendant of the Silla prince, Amenohiboko, can be connected. In addition, the empress’s conquest would have been impossible without the protection of the god of the sea (海神). This too has deep relations with the magical ability to control water.
