Abstract

In this study, I aimed to analyze the implications of the narrative literature of Empress Jingu centering on the keywords ‘water’ and ‘stone’. The legend of Empress Jingu tells that she crossed over the sea under the protection of the god of the sea and conquered the Silla. The magical power associated with the Empress’s ‘water’ is the core of this legend. Also, the stories about the mysterious stone scattered in every region where the Empress Jingu has passed are closely related to the mythical identity of the Empress. The magical power of the Empress’s ‘water’ applies to a wide area including not only the sea but also rivers, fisheries and the control of waterways. This is the virtue of the empress that appears not only in the founding myth of Korea, but also in the myth of Japanese kingship. On the other hand, the rock that the Empress climbed to receive the oracle can be interpreted as a space of passage ceremony in relation to the myth of Jumong, the myth of King Tal-Hal and the folktale of Yeon-O-Rang and Se-O-Nyeo. In the end, the miraculous and marvelous nature of these ‘water’ and ‘stone’ possessed by the Empress Jingu leads to a deep connection with Korea. In addition, it cannot be overlooked that these ‘water’ and ‘stone’ are associated with the attributes of the gods of thunder and lightning represented by Susano.
