초록
Many words carry more than one meaning by extending referential meanings to metaphorically extended meanings. Among them, ppwuri, which basically refers to roots of plants, displays diverse meanings. This research explores uses and meanings of ppwuri through an analysis of a Korean written corpus. First, this study examines the distribution of meanings of ppwuri in the database, showing the frequency of referential meanings and metaphorically extended meanings. Examination shows that the meanings of ppwuri are summarized in the following terms: (i) roots of plants, (ii) an origin or source of states/events, (iii) basis of abstract entities, (iv) causes or reasons of events/states. Such semantic properties of ppwuri indicate that the basic meaning of ppwuri as a physical object is metaphorically extended to denote abstract meanings. Based on this observation, this work characterizes abstract meanings of ppwuri in terms of metaphor theory, showing that the metaphorically extended meanings are derived from the conceptual metaphor that views abstract notions as plant roots, by matching concrete objects to abstract notions/entities. Finally, this research suggests that a corpus-based cognitive approach to language is a useful tool in characterizing diverse meanings of many referential objects used in written texts.
