Abstract
Forest science has been established in Korea for over a century. It has continued to expand into and develop areas such as land reforestation projects, plant breeding improvement, timber production, biomass industry and forest welfare services. But, the fundamental question of “what is forest (woods) really to us?” remains. This study aims to philosophically ask this fundamental question of the meaning of forest to humans and whether the “intrinsic value” of forest can be talked about. Therefore, it will examine the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the relationship with forest up to the present day and explore philosophical theories in the background. For this study, “convergent criticism methodology” was applied. Convergent criticism methodology is a creative methodology that seeks interdisciplinary convergence by researchers who first collect various academic perspectives on forestry, converge their common denominators, and arrive at research goals through philosophical criticism. Through this methodology, 1) it was applied to analyze the intrinsic value of forest based on “Vitalitas” that commonly appears in the ecosystem, and 2) the intrinsic value of forest was philosophically reinterpreted along with Korea’s philosophical history of and culture of forestry in order to establish the Korean philosophy of forestry. Consequently, 3) an ecology- and life-centric point of view was identified as forest and humans have a complementary relation in the form of existence with their own ecological status in the ecosystem, going beyond the traditional human-centric view that forest only provides products and abundance to humans. This view of forestry can be considered as ‘the philosophy of forestry’.
