Abstract

This study quantitatively analyzed research trends on Bukhansan National Park, a representative example of an urban national park, using text-mining techniques. A total of 227 domestic academic papers published between 1983 and August 2025 were collected through the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS). Morphological analysis and stopword removal were conducted on the titles and abstracts using the Komoran class of KoNLPy. Subsequently, keyword analyses - term frequency (TF), term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) - and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling were applied to examine research patterns. The results revealed four distinct developmental phases. During the initial period (1983– 1999), only 22 papers (9.7%) were published, followed by 57 (25.1%) in the 2000s and 102 (44.9%) in the 2010s, when research activity peaked. In particular, 53 studies were concentrated between 2012 and 2015. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, research continued steadily in the 2020s, with 46 papers (20.3%). By academic society, the Korean Society of Environment and Ecology accounted for 57 papers (38.3%), representing the core scholarly body in this field. The dominant research domains were ecology and environment (47.0%) and forestry (15.4%). Among the 78 theses (34.4%), master’s theses predominated, but the share of doctoral dissertations increased to 40% in the 2020s, indicating a rise in academic specialization. TF analysis highlighted the keywords “National Park” “Visit” and “Vegetation” while TF-IDF analysis identified “Dulle-gil Trail” as a period-specific topic emerging in the 2010s. LDA topic modeling produced seven main topics, which were broadly categorized into ecological/environmental (57.0%) and use/management (43.0%) dimensions. Among them, ecosystem and biodiversity (17.8%) and visitor management and park planning (16.9%) showed the highest proportions, reflecting a balanced research orientation pursuing the harmony between conservation and use, a defining characteristic of urban national parks. By adopting a data-driven and quantitative approach, this study objectively identified the structural characteristics of Bukhansan National Park research. The findings can serve as a methodological model for analyzing research trends in individual national parks and as a foundation for evidence-based policy development aimed at achieving sustainable conservation and management.
