Abstract
Forest therapy has gained attention as a method to maintain and enhance mental and physical health by utilizing natural elements. However, there is a lack of systematic standards for objectively verifying its effects. To objectively evaluate the effects of forest therapy, there is an emerging need for physiological and physical participant-reported outcome measures. This study aims to establish a more systematic framework for evaluating the effectiveness of Forest therapy programs. To collect relevant data, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using the bibliographic databases PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Science-Direct. A total of 63,859 articles published between January 2014 and December 2023 were identified, from which 97 studies were ultimately selected. These 97 studies originated from 24 countries across four continents. Most of the studies targeted young adults, and one-day programs were the most common, accounting for 51 of the selected papers. Walking, as a form of exercise therapy, was mentioned 52 times. The 135 physiological and physical participant-reported outcome measures extracted from international academic journals most frequently used blood pressure measuring devices and heart rate variability(HRV) equipment. This study highlights the necessity for standardized physiological and physical participant-reported outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of Forest therapy programs.
