‘허시모 사건'은 한국기독교사상 가장 불미스러운 사건의 하나이다. 하지만 그동안 이 사건은 실제보다 과장되어 알려져 왔다. 허시모가 화학약품으로 소년의 얼굴에 ‘도적’이라는 글씨를 쓴 것은 사실이지만, 그것은 염산이 아닌 초산은이었고, 영원히 자국을 남기려는 의도는 아니었다. 그 동안 이 사건의 경위에 대해서는 별다른 연구가 없었다. 당시 신문에는 관련 기사가 많이 실려 있는데, 이 글에서는 이를 통해 사건의 진상을 살펴보고 그 영향과 반향, 그리고 재판과정을 알아보고자 했다.이 사건은 허시모 개인은 물론 그가 소속되어 있는 안식교, 나아가 선교사들과 한국교회를 궁지에 몰아넣었다. 사건이 불거졌을 때 허시모가 솔직히 잘못을 인정하고 사과했다면 그 파장이 그렇게 크지는 않았을 것이다. 하지만 그는 몰래 피해자측과 만나 합의를 본 것으로 사건을 마무리하려 했고, 합의와 관계없이 이 사건은 도덕적윤리적 문제, 나아가 인종차별문제로 비화되었다. 여러 언론과 사회단체에서 그를 성토했고, 일본의 우익들도 그를 비난했다. 1920년대 들어와 터져 나온 선교사들의 비행과 추문은 은연중 그들이 품고 있던 백인우월주의를 보여준다. 그리고 이 사건은, 세계각처에 파송되는 한국 선교사들이 가슴에 새겨야 할 반면교사라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
‘Haysmer Accident' is one of the most shameful things in Korean church history. But these days, it has been known exaggerately than it was. It's true that he wrote ‘도적’(thief) on the boy's face, but the chemotherapeutant he used was silver acetic acid, not hydrochloric acid. His doing was not an act with intent to leave a scar to child's whole life. In the meantime, the circumstances of this accident has not been paid attention. But we can find a lot of articles on the newspapers published at that time. The purpose of this thesis are to make clear the real state of accident, and to examine the influence, the reflection, and the result. This accident drove Haysmer, The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, missionaries, Korean church into a corner. If he admitted his fault and apologized frankly at the first stage, the accident was not magnified seriously like that. But he tried to finish all after secreat mutual agreement with victim, and it made situation worse. Finally, this accident leapt to the matter of morality, ethics, and racial discrimination. In 1920', many missionaries made misdeed, it shows the white supremacy hidden in their mind. So This accident will be an object lesson for the Korean missionaries working all over the world.
