Abstract
Recent urban planning in Korea has put an emphasis on the soft development such as regional innovation, creative city, cultural city and smart growth. The purpose of this study is to understand the institutional characteristic of Australian urban planning and to get its implications for Korean urban planning system. Australia developed as a colonial state by the U.K. in 1787, and urban planning deployed institutional system since the 1830s. The Commonwealth Government of Australia only provides some guidelines for urban planning, an actual urban planning is governed by state and territorial government. Three implications arisen from Australian urban planning are as follows; first, urban planning has to be planned and practiced flexibly in terms of circumstance and characteristic of a region. Second, urban planning has to be reformed easily by an institutional system. Third, urban planning has to emphasize the equality of social system for sustainable development.
