『열흘 밤의 꿈(夢十夜)』론 ―제8야에 나타난 ‘거울’의 표상―

本稿では、『夢十夜』の第八夜の主な素材である「鏡」の機能と役割について考察してみた。「鏡」は、第一に、鏡に映る自分の外貌と騒がしい往来の人々に大変大きな関心を持っている「自分」のキャラクターが持つ特徴を映し出している。第二に、床屋の鏡の前は体が拘束され自由に動けないため、前にある鏡に集中せざるを得ない環境を提供し、鏡に映るものに注目させる効果がある。この鏡には華やかな外観を追求する人物や生存競争が激しい社会の中で苦労して働く人物が映る。これは「自分」の姿を投影しているといえよう。第三に、第八夜は現実性の強い作品として評価されるが、鏡の効果によって第一夜から一貫して流れている「夢」の持つ不可解性を維持している。 「修善寺の大患」以前の作品には、近代日本に対する鋭い批判と科学や迷信に拘る人物がよく描かれているが、第八夜の「鏡」は、漱石の初期及び中期の小説の持つ特徴が示されている素材だと言える。
Abstract
This paper examines the function of the mirror as the main material of “The Eighth Night” in Ten Nights of Dreams by Natsume Soseki. First, the mirror reflects the characteristics of one’s appearance and the character “me” who is very interested in people outside the barbershop. Second, in front of the mirror in the barbershop, one has no choice but to focus on the mirror, because their body is constrained and not free; one ends up having to concentrate on what is reflected in the mirror. The mirror reflects a person who pursues a splendid appearance or faces difficulties in life in a society where competition for survival is fierce—a reflection of “me.” Third, “The Eighth Night” is evaluated as a work of strong realism; it maintains the incomprehensibility of the dream that consistently flows since the first night due to the effect of the mirror. The writer’s works prior to ‘Great disease of Shuzenji Temple’ often depict sharp criticisms of modern Japan and people who are bound by science or superstition. The mirror of “The Eighth Night” demonstrates the characteristics of Soseki’s early and mid-period novels.
